Bi-Level Autoracks: Photos

TTX remanufactured this car from an older TTGX rack. In late 1994/early 1995 TTX Company began placing what David Casdorf calls "filler panels" in the spaces along the upper and lower edges of the standard panels, as on this rack. At the same time, TTX introduced a more reinforced panel design with fewer holes, as on this car. The solid yellow paint scheme of the entire car make it a unique look for a Conrail autorack. You could model this in HO using an undecorated Walthers Bi-Level autorack kit, which is entirely molded in yellow. Fill in the panel gaps, paint the proper side panel oxide red, then apply the correct decals to the panel and flatcar. You won't get the proper hole spacing, but that is a minor detail as far as I am concerned. For more details on the kit and decals, see the HO Modeling page. As far as I know, no bi-level model exists in N scale.

Words to the wise--never photograph long freight cars at maximum zoom! This is a standard 89'4" autorack, just visually compressed. The smooth instead of ribbed roof makes this an interesting car.

An empty autorack was heading north out of Florida back to the plants in the northeast. Note that on this car the Conrail logos are applied to solid panels, while the flat car has the TTX logo.

Erie Lackawanna:

Open frame bi-level autorack hauling some awesome trucks. Even though the flatcar is TTGX, the rack is still in its original Erie Lackawanna colors.
